Using 'Lime Mortar' in brickwork

Was your property built from lime ?

A Lime Mortar was used up until 1920's. Unfortunately through the 50s and 60s property's were often being restored with cement mortar unaware of the damage caused to the property.

Lime mortar and timber was used as they are both breathable and flexible, allowing movement in the building as well as breathing out the moisture, that would penetrate your brickwork when it rains in the winter.

Cement mortar should not be used on Lime mortar buildings. It's a absolute no go.

Cement is too strong and seals all moistures in the joints. That water has to escape and often will work it's way through the face of the bricks.

If your thinking of a having your house restored do your research on lime mortar before accepting any quotations.
